ART COMPETITIONS

Organising art competitions

To engage students in creating art and to motivate them to develop their creativity outside of the classroom I have led and organised a wide range of art competitions for students of all ages. Here are some recent examples of posters I created to promote and advertise art competitions.

Artscape logo design competitions

I organised the annual Artscape logo competition open to students of all ages from 9 to 18 years. Artscape is an international school group art show. Each year students took part in a competition to design the logo to promote the art show.

ARTiculation public speaking competition

ARTiculation is a national public speaking initiative for young people aged 16 to 19. I worked with an A Level Fine Art student to support her preparation, research and speech for the competition held art the Whitechapel Art Gallery, London. The competition was judged by art critic and BBC TV presenter, Alistair Sooke.

Shorifa, a Year 12 art student took part in the regional heat of the ARTiculation public speaking competition. Participants spoke about an artwork of their choice and Shorifa chose to speak about Vincent Van Gogh's Sunflowers. The competition judge, art critic Alistair Sooke commented on the enticing and personal introduction of Shorifa's talk as well as the surprising analysis of the colour yellow and the visual aids used.

Junior School summer art challenge

To promote student independent learning outside the classroom over the long summer holiday break I created the summer art challenge for students aged 7 to 11. Students were encouraged to think creatively and develop their experiences of art outside of the classroom environment through taking part in a variety of art related activities and challenges.

House art competition

Run as an inter-house competition, students from Year 3 to 6 (age 7 to 11) were given the brief to create a piece of art using any media and discipline which symbolised kindness using only their house colour of blue, purple, green or red.

The winning designs were then professionally printed to create permanent wall decal mural in the school.

Junior School photography competition

I ran this inter-house photography competition for Junior School staff and students. The theme of the photography competition was 'be the change'.

Entries were required to take a personal and meaningful photograph in response to the theme of 'be the change' as well as demonstrate originality and artistic flair. Both highly commended and winning entries were showcased in an exhibition.

'During my holiday I was shocked to find plastic waste on such a beautiful beach surrounded by nature. So we decided as a family to pick it up every day of our holiday. I took this photo of my sister with her beach finds. I have been inspired by D'Arcy Lunn's Teaspoons of Change and realised that small changes can make a big difference. We asked the kids club to start a weekly beach clean and make 'handfuls of change' to save such a beautiful island habitat' (Student- aged 9)

'This picture was taken in the middle of the day on New Year's Eve in New South Wales as ash rained down and wind blew ferociously. It felt apocalyptic and was a big wake up call to the fact that if we don't start being the change where the environment is concerned there will be many more (un) natural disasters for us' (Staff member)

'To create this photograph the first thing I did was to think about what could be both reused and recycled. One of the first things that came to my mind were metal straws and water bottles. After gathering the materials for the picture, I took the picture. This photograph represents ‘be the change’ by showing what all humans should be using, as they say, a small change can help the environment' (Student- aged 9)
