In this unit of work students learnt about a range of abstract art styles through analysing the work of a variety of abstract artists including Hilda af Klint, Frank Stella, Piet Mondrian, Kazimir Malevich and Sonia Delaunay. Students also responded to the colours, shapes and compositions of the work of Friedensreich Hundertwasser and Aeropittura movement.
The theme of viewpoints inspired students to view the school environment and the local environment in new ways. The early flights of school house figurehead Amelia Earhart and the journeys of the artists of the Italian Aeropittura movement provided inspiration for abstract aerial compositions.
Students used the iPad app Google Earth and Zoom Earth NASA satellite imagery to explore diverse global locations in order to create unique compositions.

Abstract ceramic sculptures
Mixed-media ceramic sculptures inspired by aerial viewpoints of Singapore landmarks.
Using iPad app Google Earth and NASA Zoom Earth program
To create a series of mixed media abstract canvas compositions students used the iPad app Google Earth and NASA interactive satellite imagery to explore and create compositions using aerial viewpoints from local and global locations. Attention was focused on shape, line and space to create interesting compositions to work from.
Students were encouraged to take creative risks and experiment with a range of painting effects in order to depict a variety of geographical features.
Using the interactive features of the iPad app Google Earth and Zoom Earth program, students were able to explore diverse locations around the world. Both places that students had previously visited as well as virtual journeys to new corners of the globe provided students with inspiration for their paintings.

Mixed-media abstract compositions inspired by the local landscape. Students developed original ideas, experimented with colour and made independent choices about suitable media and techniques.
Abstract collage
Sketching viewpoints of the school environment

Exploring how colour, shape and mark-making can express emotion
Inspired by the work of artist Yellena James, students explored how cold and warm colours can convey atmosphere and express emotion. Students also experimented with using shapes and mark-making to create original abstract compositions.
Observational drawing
Inspired by the shapes, lines and colours found in the surrealist paintings of artist Joan Miro, students created these observational drawings of computer innards. Students focused on closely observing and recording the shapes, lines and patterns found in the circuit boards, wires and computer components.
