In this cross-curricular book illustration project students were inspired by descriptions of characters in the novel Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll. A focus on using strategies learnt in English lessons to explore characterisation was a focus of this unit.
Students researched and responded to the work of contemporary and historical book illustrators, including Sir John Tenniel and Sara Fanelli in order to create playful book illustrations and book cover designs. The surreal stop-motion animation films of animator Jan Svankmajer also provided inspiration for the character illustrations.
Students explored the links between art and English and gained an understanding of the illustration process and relationship between author and illustrator. Through experimenting with ideas, exploring the design process and playing with typography, students produced a fully realised book cover design.

Design process
Design ideas and collage mock-ups of Alice In Wonderland characters. Students studied extracts of Lewis Carroll's text in order to gain an understanding of the characters they were designing.
The collage techniques of illustrator Sara Fanelli and film maker and animator Jan Svankmajer were used to create mock-ups of the character illustrations.

Book cover illustrations
Students researched and analysed the contrasting illustration techniques of Sir John Tenniel and Sara Fanelli and used elements of their research to inform their design style.
Exploring the illustration techniques of Sir John Tenniel
To gain an understanding of the techniques of illustrator Sir John Tenniel, students experimented with re-creating studies of the work in a range of media including pencil, fine charcoal pencil and ink pen.
